Gym – 06/08/2009

It felt great to be back at Total Fitness Zone last night! It has been a long time since I’ve done a weight workout in addition to the cardio I normally do. Last night I exercised for 47 minutes on the treadmill, burning an average of 1081 calories per hour. I varied my speed between 3.3 and 8.2, and changed the incline around.

After my cardio workout, I did bicep curls, forearm curls, bench press, tricep pressdowns, and dumbell flys. Today my body has been a bit sore, but it’s a refreshing feeling.

Hey Mister, Would You Please Put Some Clothes On??

So I was in the locker room today at the gym getting ready to leave. I didn’t have to do much, just unlock the locker, fetch my stuff, and leave. I decided that I wouldn’t be changing back into my clothes becuase I’d go home to take a shower before going to play poker. There is a guy no more than two feet away from me. He decides that it is completely necessary to remove his clothing WHILE FACING ME. I still am not sure exactly why.

Part of me gets really uncomfortable and irritated when such things happen. Why take all your clothes off in the middle of a public locker room when there are CHILDREN potentially entering it? Sure, its the gym and rather doubtful any children might be entering the locker room, but still. Part of me becomes irritated because, well, if its that necessary to become COMPLETELY NAKED to change into your spandex shorts, you should do it IN THE BATHROOM in PRIVACY. At the same time though, I can look at it a different way. I wish I were able to do that. I wish I were comfortable enough with my sexuality and body to be able to just change wherever I darned please. Perhaps, in time, I will.

Going to the Gym – 2/24/2009 and 2/25/2009

So, I managed to get to the gym TWO times in a row after a week plus hiatus. Fortunately, my body was fairly forgiving and most of the things I was able to do with ease were still easy. They say that if you don’t go to the gym for just three days, your muscles begin to deteriorate. I don’t know if I believe this extreme statement, but I will say that I can certainly tell I haven’t been lifting at the gym.

Monday I had every intention of lifting weights, but by the time I had done the elliptical for 45 minutes and the recumbent bike for 25 minutes I had no interest. I burned about 800 calories, but desperately wanted to actually lift in addition to the cardio. Tuesday, I decided to cash in on that desire. I started with 30 minutes on the elliptical machine and followed it up with a reasonably intense chest / bicep workout. It felt EXTREMELY good to be lifting weights again, despite the disappointment in the amount I was able to do. I then followed that with 25 minutes on the recumbent bike.

So today I once again went to the gym. I believe that makes FOUR times this week! Yahoo! When I first arrived, all of the elliptical machines were being used except one. I hopped on it and began to work out, but noticed over my headphones this irritating squeaking sound with each stride on the machine. I could live with the stupid squeaking sound, but it also was not properly recording calories. The Total Fitness Zone should really look into performing regular maintenance on their machines!

Due to the ellipticals being in use and the one available being completely worthless and loud, I took to a nautilus treadmill. I actually liked this particular unit very much. Speed and elevation controls were located on the grip bar, as well as a start and stop button. I exercised on it for 37 minutes, varying inclines and speeds. I burned 615 calories.

Next, some elliptical machines became free so I moved over to one. I worked out for only 15 minutes on it and burned 210 calories. I was feeling very tired today, I think, due to my workout last night. Nonetheless, 825 calories is better than nothing!

So Last night I, again, went to the gym. I did the typical 60+ minute elliptical workout: 67 calories and 1080 calories. After that, I went out to the weight area and lifted a bit for the first time there. I absolutely hated it. I did curls first, 40 lbs. / arm, 2 sets of 10. Then, I went to do dumbbell flys. I hunted and hunted for a set of 15 lb dumbbells, but couldn’t find them. I settled for 20 lbs (too much for the exercise) and did 2 sets of 8. Finally, I did tricep pull downs. The piece of equipment I was on was HORRIBLE! I set the pin to 40 lbs (my usual for this exercise) and began the exercise, only to find it FAR too easy. I moved the pin down and down until finally I found a weight I was happy with, but that was almost the entire stack, LOL.

One of the things I disliked about lifting weights there was the environment. I felt incredibly uncomfortable because there were a lot of people lifting weights and, of course, all of them were in better shape than I. That in itself didn’t bother me, but I felt like a lot of people were kind of looking at me like “What the hell is this guy doing here?” The members who were lifting weights last night seemed to have a very arrogant persona about them and I certainly felt uncomfortable with that. Unfortunately The Total Fitness Zone has a much different environment than the previous gym I attended, the Southern Vermont Recreation Center.

Next, I proceeded back into the “cardio zone” and used a Stair Master treadmill. This thing, I swear, was from the Pac-Man days. Walking on it made the controls at the front of the machine wobble and shake at 3 miles per hour. I was nervous about trying to run on it, but figured that if the piece of shit killed me I might be able to get a free membership for a year so why not. I took the speed of the machine up to 5.8 Mph at one point, and the controls were shaking so heavily I had to steady my hand to slow the machine back down!!! I swear that if you looked closely at it while I was running you probably could have seen nuts and bolts flying out! Eeeek!

An Experiment

So this is my new blog. I used to have a desire to write in a blog every single day and tell a few things that happened in my day, but for some reason the desire vanished. Well… It’s somehow appeared again.

So today I went to the gym on the elliptical machine for 67 minutes and burned 1038 calories. It was challenging because I’ve only been to the Total Fitness Zone a few times and their machines are much different from what I am used to. It almost seems like the stride is too short and causes a bit of pain in my right knee the next day. I really wish that didn’t happen, but it could also be a product of my not going to the gym in 2 months and hitting the elliptical for 60+ minutes right away.

I just got back from visiting my dad in Maine on Monday. I had a really great time at his home over the weekend and took lots of photos. Once I get a bit of free time next week, I’ll be uploading the photos from the trip here. If I’m really ambitious they may include captions, but I’m not promising anything!

I am really looking forward to Christmas at Mom’s house. Christmas is my favorite time of year and this year is especially exciting for me. For the first time in 3 years, we will be celebrating Christmas ON CHRISTMAS with my sister! I can’t wait for that. Also, it will be at Mom’s house in the new living room. I am glad they finished it before snowfall, and while I didn’t help build it, I helped clean out the shed. I don’t have any photos on my local machine, but maybe if Mema would send some to me I’ll edit the post and put them here!

That’s all for now.
